changing controling race of a single player game save.
UE has been unable to switch races without AI controling new race
how it is done;
first you need 2 computers or use warzone.
edit save to multiplayer game.
host load as original controlling race and person joining as new saved race.
EDIT; host player must leave game before joining person saves
joining person saves game without turning.
close game and open joined persons save he just saved and edit back to single player game.
and it worked.
I have only done this once but worked first time.
tell me if anyone else can duplacete this.

Hi thunderchero
Just to confirm that this
With a slight twist, as I have not yet downloaded latest java to both of my PCs and therefore cannot run latest UE on both, I did it a little differently.
Only difference I did was got host to load as new race and joiner to load as original race. Then I saved new race game as a new save and edited it back to single player with UE.
Same result, worked first time and plays perfect.
Not something I'd use very often, but glad to confirm it works.

Pigman

If this really works, .... it would be simply awesome.
There is one crucial point that needs to be tested though. After you have changed the player controlled race, does the AI really take over the former player controlled race accordingly?
A 1000 thanks for finding out so much Thunder. I pray that it works!

mentat, maybe it would be quicker to test on files you already have?

Hmm, yeah could do that, not sure if I can handle that in the warzone, since I never used it before. Just installed it, and giving it a go.
Lets see.
Hmmpff, but the warzone only starts vanilla botf, well anyway, I ll try.
Ermm, I must have misread your first post Thunder, it seems I need a second PC to do so, which of course I do not have at disposal. The warzone/game is still waiting for someone to join in, .... so maybe we can coordinate that test.

Hi Mentat
As you can see, I confirmed that thunderchero's idea/solution does indeed work and am willing to check as I have several networked PC's at home so it's easy to check.
In fact, I started a game as Feds and converted it to Klings as per my earlier post, so I'll carry on the game as the Feds and Klings were quite close, I should be able to determine if AI is now controlling Feds.
I'll let you know.

Just tried about 90 turns and Feds did nothing, ignored my diplomatic requests, only had ships they started with and still sat at Sol, doing nothing, no orbitals powered, no action.
Just a quick test but I suspect the AI is therefore not controlling the race you originally started with.
Perhaps someone else would like to try it out?
Sorry if bad news.

Sorry did not post earlier,
testing with mentat today and for AI to take over original race of save. host player (started with original race) must leave before joining person saves.
and AI take over correctly
Edit; note. I think this will also work for multi player games of same map if the host uses correct save for the race he is planning on playing and other players can select anyor all races. once single player game has been edited to multiplayer game.

Yup!!
With that small additional step it seems to work perfectly, so I guess this means that anyone who wants to offer a predefined scenario so that players can opt to be any empire in that scenario, will work fine so long as you have a first turn save for each empire.
I presume you could also do this for MP games, which could offer a different twist to Tourneys.
Anyway, glad it works.

It would be a way to compare performance of different players in identical position and whether they did or didn't know map details doesn't matter as long as it's the same for everyone.
Would be a completely different type of competition, but may appeal to some.
Just my thoughts.

I see where you're coming from, but think about it for a bit.......it would be a bit like bridge tournements where all tables play the same hands.nope not a chance if you think about it, it would give players info on minors and other races location. That would be very bad.

Well I am sure it will be worth to try a tournament with a standard Alpha/Beta quadrant map.
The question is not only how the minors and systems are located, but more or less how the ressources are placed on the map to even the chances for all Major powers.
e.g. The Federation might get a good start with many adjacent Minors, but it will be in the center of the map. Thus sooner or later it will have enemies/competetors on all fronts. The others will have some real good systems to compensate the more minors of the Feds and a rather docile backyard. Finally, Dilithium should be placed strategically and actually mean something to an Empire.
