Tactics against Klingon HCII - Vanilla
My brother and I play BOTF frequently (usually tech 5) and I have had the hardest time dealing with these ships. It doesn't seem to matter what I throw at it... they always tear me up. The other night our battle was Cardassians (me): 109 HCII VS Klingon (him): 37 HCII and 43 Scout II. I was confident that I was going to win this battle... it was a slaughter... mine! After 3 turns I had taken out less than 2 full groups of his HCII and he had destroyed my entire fleet. So my question is this: How do you veterans deal with this ship in multiplayer? What tactics do you use?

For every one hc he builds you need to build a hc and a destryoyer.cconnorsjr wrote:My brother and I play BOTF frequently (usually tech 5) and I have had the hardest time dealing with these ships. On the fire volley set you destroyers to strafe and hc to assault, round two your destroyers should now be close enough to set to ram and same goes for the hc and just keep ramming...
Scouts are good to ram as well but the Cardies need a mix of ships to enable you to get the best out of them.
Plus if you intel the crap out of him you shold get a few of those lovely ships as well

Kling HC2 is overpowered, to succeed a ramming victory you need to outnumber his HC2s 3 to 1 with Card HC2s (based on comparable ship experience). Fast attack are good ramming ships, but decent players will destroy these first.
Also, if you can get Battleship 2 then you're sorted.
Best advice is don't let him get HC2.

Best ideas would be either killing him off before he gets the upgrade, (but between you and me the HCI is a brute in it's own right already) and with good systems and a minor or two he can get the upgrade on a T5 game in 50 turns anyway.
Or go all out with intel. Set to science to slow down his reseach, set to economic to steal money or preferably blow up loads of industry buildings to slow down production of HC's or set to Miltary if he's gotten HCII's to steal or destroy them.
And if that fails, then build a fleet 3 times the size of his and play the numbers. If you've got a couple of spare good systems you can use them for ship scrapping to stop your economy being pulled under by the huge ship maintenace costs.

The best way to defeat his expensive ships is to cripple his economy. Subjugate his worlds, build nothing but Forced Labor Farms/Camps and Trade Goods, scrap every other structure (for credits!), mess them up before he can retake them so they become nearly worthless (and filled with nothing but unhappy, overworked, starving people) anyhow. If he doesn't retake lost systems and loses more systems (while maintaining a huge fleet) then his income quickly goes red and his empire gets paralyzed ... but if he does retake them then start bombing (and killing Outposts/Starbases) to restrict his Medium Range options. If he has limited Dilithium then make him fight to keep it, below a certain threshold the reinforcements for his war machine grind to a halt, but if he's got tons of Dilithium to spare then don't bother because it's not an exploitable weakness. Spread cheap ships (Scouts) to cover space, one ship per sector, to force him to battle across multiple turns whenever he tries to advance or reclaim his territory (but careful with this, since too many victories/losses have cumulative morale effects on both of your empires). Keep hostile Intel pressure up relentlessly on all fronts, this is what Cards do best! You can't take away his techs but you can halt him from enjoying them and you can slow him from getting more. The more stuff you steal and smash, the less stuff he can use to build (or rebuild) or even maintain his expensive toys. It can be an ugly attrition situation, but as long as your empire keeps (slowly) moving forward while his empire keeps (slowly) sinking the results are inevitable.
You could try dividing your fleet and harassing multiple targets on multiple fronts. Raid every Credit you can from orbit. Snipe every Colony Ship or Transport left unescorted. Pick off single ships before they can move towards the main Task Forces. But this requires much more strategy (and some psychology, if you're trying to rattle him off balance) and already assumes both empires have military parity. Still, it is very rewarding when done well.
